Modern Abstract Design by Gordon Walters

After seeing the aftermath of the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, I remembered my time traveling on the South island there and passing through that city.  While I was there, I noticed some pretty interesting designs from the Polynesian Maori culture, a lot of them making use of the Koru, or unfurling spiral shaped silver fern.  Gordon Walters is a New Zealand painter and graphic designer who combined European abstract art with Maori themes.  The fern plant shape is pretty simple, but I like the way he plays with it in different sizes and patterns.

Bonus fact: The actor who played Jango Fett, Temuera Morrison, is Maori.

Reader S.O.W -- Brady Tuazon

This week's SOW is from Brady Tuazon from Los Angeles with some really interesting painting work.  Painting is something that you don't see as much of these days, and I think that people who paint deserve some hefty credit when comparing the process of painting to digital art or sketching.  And theres something strangely alluring about that chair piece he did, though I can't put my finger on it.

The Pop Art of Andy Warhol

Not quite sure why we haven't done a post on him yet, but going through his work, Andy Warhol was a heck of an artist with a vision that most people can only achieve past sobriety.  Growing up as a successful commercial illustrator, Warhol committed his sole existence to manipulating his artistic perspective into captivating visuals that encompassed the Pop Art genre through print, painting, and film.  

He came up with the term "fifteen minutes of fame", and knew what he was doing when he decided to start painting daily objects of mass production and celebrity personalities.
