Where Does the Corporate Art Go?

From coast to coast, millions of dollars of corporate art that once hung in the offices of well-known banks including Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, Wachovia and more, has become entangled in the fallout from the financial crisis.

The fate of that artwork is still being sorted out, along with the assets involved in many of the unprecedented bank failures and resulting mergers that took place last year. Some of the surviving financial institutions appear to be holding onto the valuable artwork for their own collections, despite the chance to cushion their coffers with its sale. Others are selling the art or donating it to local museums and nonprofits.

A very interesting article on the subject online at Portfolio.com

Obey Shepard Fairey Close Knit Original art for auction

Here is an amazing original called ‘Close Knit’ up for charity auction HERE!

Shepard Fairey
Close Knit, 2009
Spray Painted Stencil & Mixed Media Collage on Canvas
44" x 60"

"I chose to illustrate this image of two girls knitting (in a Rush Arts Education program) because I think it really captures the idea that learning art in schools is about more than crayon drawings -- it's about creativity, something that transcends all class and race boundaries. I think the joy of making something is universal, and it's an opportunity that every kid should have."

Shepard Fairey is the man behind OBEY GIANT, the graphics that have changed the way people see art and the urban landscape. What started with an absurd sticker he created in 1989 while a student at the Rhode Island School of Design has since evolved into a worldwide street art campaign, as well as an acclaimed body of fine art. In 2003, Shepard founded Studio Number One, a creative design firm dedicated to applying his ethos at the intersection of art and enterprise. Shepard's art reached a new height of prominence in 2008, when his "HOPE" portrait of Barack Obama became the iconic image of the presidential campaign and helped inspire an unprecedented political movement.

Another Bristol Banksy Vandalized

The Bristol Evening Post reports that one of the city’s most well known Banksy murals was hit by paintball vandals earlier this week. The piece has been protected by the Bristol City Council since 2006, when a public vote revealed that over 90% of respondents were in favor of conserving it. The act is an obvious retaliation against the artist’s current high profile exhibit at the Bristol Museum and comes just two months after another Bristol Banksy was defaced. When will the haters realize these antics only drum up more publicity?

Buy Art on the Government’s Dollar

The Telegraph clues us in to a UK government backed loan program which aims to fuel the art market with millions in revenue, while making the collecting game a bit more egalitarian. The Own Art program, funded by the government-run Arts Council England, hands out up to £2,000 in individual loans for the purchase of art, completely interest free and repayable over a ten month period. According to the Telegraph, 25% of those who have taken advantage have an annual income below the national average wage, and to date £6.5 million in revenue has been generated for artists.

We’ve taken a look and should clarify that the program does not apply to all galleries and includes approximately 250 participating venues across England. The £2,000 limit may be used for a single purchase, or spread out over the acquisition of multiple works. While only one loan is permitted at any given time, there is no limit to how many times an individual may use the program. The 0% APR is subsidized by Arts Council England, which pays all interest to the lending bank instead of the customer.

The program is also available at 38 galleries throughout Scotland, via the Scottish Arts Council and over 80 galleries in Wales via Principality Collectorplan, where it has been in operation for over 20 years.

Back in the U.S., these loan programs are worth considering, given the debate over the $50 million given to the National Endowment for the Arts via the Economic Stimulus Act. Opponents have argued there are far more crucial economic factors, including rising unemployment, to justify pumping millions of taxpayer dollars into the arts, while others have claimed the amount is far too miniscule (less than 1% of the approximately $800 billion Stimulus Act), and those in arts related professions need aid as well. Rather than residing to the Roosevelt-esque New Deal tactics employed during the Great Depression, perhaps such government backed loan programs would do more to not only fund the arts but fuel the economy at large, by promoting consumer spending and freeing up the lending capabilities of our nation’s financial institutions.

Stussy 2009 April Feature: John Pound-Garbage Pail Kids

Stussy serve up their monthly educational experience as their 2009 April feature focuses on influential illustrator and artist, John Pound. Having put together a capsule for Stussy earlier this year, his most well-known work is perhaps his special Garbage Pail Kids work for Topps back in the 1980s which was an unexpected success; “I had turned it in, in January of 85, and I didn’t really hear much from them, until maybe May or June. They were doing a test release and said ‘Oh man, it’s really taking off. Sales are really going good on Garbage Pail Kids. Lets do another series.’” The interview is in itself quite comprehensive, touching on numerous aspects of his life from his childhood to the present as well as an obvious focus on the process behind Garbage Pail Kids. Check the feature out over at Stussy.com.

Art prices fall 35% as collectors cash in

It is a headline that strikes fear into the hearts of the people who make their living selling art and the shortsighted speculative art buyers who ultimately drove the market to the brink of collapse alongside the economy last year. For serious art collectors and sensible artists who managed to avoid the temptation of price gouging in the recent market, however, it is a call to arms: 2009 is a year to BUY art. The news comes today via the FINANCIAL TIMES who report that the average prices of high end work has dropped a whopping 35% after enjoying an average annual appreciation rate of 20% over the last decade. It’s the largest decline since 1991 when prices fell a record 41%. Perhaps Damien Hirst’s greatest talent isn’t art after all, but rather timing:

Art prices plunged during the first quarter of the year as cash-strapped collectors looked to unload works by postwar masters that had earlier boomed in price along with the stock market.

The Mei Moses index, set for release on Tuesday, shows art prices fell 35 per cent in the first quarter, having held up during earlier months of the financial crisis.

The overall index fell 4.8 per cent last year.

The decline accelerated as people who lost money in the financial crisis, including victims of the Madoff fraud, put up works for sale, often at a loss, several art world insiders said.

The selling has particularly hit works by postwar and contemporary artists, they said. The Wall Street elite had favoured such works during a seven-year boom in art prices. The best performing postwar artist, Andy Warhol, saw a decline in the value of his work. A Warhol portrait of Mick Jagger sold for $1.1m in the quarter. The seller bought it in 2006 for $1.5m.

Postwar and contemporary art prices fell more than 30 per cent, according to the index, which combines New York and London prices. Such prices had enjoyed an average annual rise of 20 per cent for the past decade.

Works by Old Masters, a less fashionable genre in recent years, have declined less. A painting by J.M.W. Turner, “The Temple of Jupiter”, sold for $12.9m last quarter, a return of 10 per cent a year for the seller, who bought it in 1982 for $1.1m, said Michael Moses, a co-founder of the index.

The worst year on record for art investors was 1991, when prices dropped 41 per cent, said Mr Moses, who has collected data going back to the 1800s.

The index providers added that the art market tended to track the state of the economy but with a time lag.
