Sleek Screenprints by Jason Munn (The Small Stakes)

So I got this really awesome gift in the mail the other day from a super cool aunt who has great taste in gifts, music (she showed me the Ukelele Movement), fashion, food, and all things good.  Kudos to relatives that have mastered the art of gift-giving. The music poster book of Wisconsin native, Oakland, CA based Jason Munn containing over 150 pieces of his finest work is my new favorite book.  In addition to my Pentagram Marks logo book, I'm adding this one to my list of tangible resources to look through for design brainstorming.  Starting a project is always better when you're able to draw visual stimulation from other sources, most of which could be found online though I do like holding traditional print in my hands every once in a while to give my retinas a break.

Jason Munn goes for broke with his screenprints, and just goes to show that being a successful graphic designer these days can be done.  His studio is called The Small Stakes, he really likes Diet Coke, and he has a pair of Fiskars scissors with his name engraved in them.  Check out Grain Edit's interview on him here.

Abbot Kinney Festival Posters

While the newest posters for Abbot Kinney Festival in Venice, California are clearly the best of the posters so far, they certainly are the most simple.  Simplicity is beautiful, isn't it.

2010 LA Marathon Poster - Designed by Cleon Petersen of Studio Number One

Celebrating the marathon's 25th anniversary, this year's 2010 LA Marathon poster is designed by Cleon Petersen of Studio Number One, a Los Angeles design studio supported by Shepard Fairey.  This screen print is available for $45 at Subliminal Projects.

The design work from the past Los Angeles Marathons haven't been bad either.  I'm liking the logo from last year's 2009 LA Marathon:

Olly Moss - Master Race Poster

Olly Moss is in the Olympic spirit with this appealing yet insightful design about a big step in the Olympics of 1936.  The man really knows how to say so much, visually, with so little.  It's a very powerful moment from history that I wasn't even aware about, and for that I thank you Mr. Moss not only for your eye candy but also for the history lesson.

David Klein - Retro 1950's Travel Posters

Vintage travel advertising and broadway window posters from the 1950s/1960s.

Coming from a watercolor background, Klein made post-war era travel appealing and animated through the way he implements landmarks and abstract coloring in his posters. He really knows how to provoke that gung-ho attitude through visual imagery in these.

The first poster was featured in an article by Entertainment Weekly in the discussion of the Emmy and Golden Globe winning AMC drama Mad Men. Surely one of the most influential and greatest commercial illustrators of our time. Found off grain edit here.
